Whixall Social Centre Double Celebration

Whixall Social Centre had two reasons to celebrate on Sunday 29th May, not only is it The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year but it is also the 50th Anniversary of Whixall Social Centre serving the local community. The old Whixall Primary School became the Whixall Social Centre in 1972 and is at the very heart of Whixall life – putting on numerous events and celebrations throughout the year. The Social Centre is a charity and all monies from events go towards the upkeep and maintenance of the Social Centre. It is run by a small committee made from local residents.

To mark these two events, Whixall Social Centre Committee commissioned two commemorative benches and asked two of the longest standing Whixall residents, Mr and Mrs Herbert and Jean Ikin, to do the honour of unveiling the benches. Herbert (92) was born in Whixall and has lived there all his life, Jean (84) has lived in Whixall since the age of 11; they have been married for 66 years and were married in the old United Reform Church in Whixall. Interestingly their sons attended the old Whixall Primary School, now the Social Centre. Mr and Mrs Ikin were also members of the Social Centre Committee many years ago and took an active part in their role.

The Whixall Social Centre Committee Chairman, Mr Steve Grogan, said it was a privilege and honour to have Mr and Mrs Ikin unveil the Social Centre’s commemorative benches and it was great to have so many of the Ikin family in attendance as well as other residents of Whixall for the event. Both Mr and Mrs Ikin said they were so happy to have been invited as the Guests of Honour and thanked all the Committee for their hard work in making the event such a success.

After the unveiling all were invited into the Social Centre for tea and cakes made by the members of the Social Centre Committee. The benches are situated outside the front of the Social Centre and will be a constant reminder of two special occasions and are there for the benefit and use of the Whixall community.
